DMSc, MPAS, PA-C, ABAIM · Professor & Vice Chair for Innovation, University of Pittsburgh
Transforming how clinicians learn to think. I've spent two decades at the intersection of clinical practice, education, and technology. ReasonFirst is my platform for building the future of PA education — where reasoning comes before AI, and rigor comes before convenience.
Customizable by specialty, difficulty, care setting, and documentation type. Ready to use in your next session — faculty-controlled from start to finish.

Change happens at the speed of trust.
My goal has always been the same: to ensure that every PA graduate enters practice with the clinical reasoning skills to think independently — before, not after, they reach for AI assistance.
— Dr. Dipu Patel, DMSc, MPAS, PA-C, ABAIM
I'm a Professor and Vice Chair for Innovation at the University of Pittsburgh Department of PA Studies, where I've built the nation's first digital health course for PA students and continue to lead curriculum innovation at the intersection of AI, clinical reasoning, and education technology.
My work spans national PA education policy, over a decade as Chair of the Massachusetts Board of Registration for Physician Assistants, publishing (Digital Health: Telemedicine and Beyond), funded research into AI-generated clinical assessment, and international keynote speaking on healthcare workforce transformation.
ReasonFirst is the platform I built to bring these ideas to life — giving faculty the tools they've always needed.

Professor at Pitt PA Studies. Creator of the nation's first digital health course for PA students.

Most EdTech leads with AI. ReasonFirst leads with the student's own clinical thinking. AI enters the workflow only after the student has demonstrated independent reasoning.
This isn't anti-AI. It's pro-thinking. Faculty control when and how AI is introduced — creating a deliberate progression from independent reasoning to AI-augmented reflection.
SOAP notes, H&Ps, assessments and plans. No AI. No shortcuts.
Structured rubrics. Insight into how the student thinks.
Faculty toggles AI on. Student identifies reasoning gaps.
AI as a mirror for growth, not a crutch for completion.
The most important skills for the future will be adaptability and flexible thinking paired with curiosity; this applies to the teacher and the learner.
— Dipu
Original, research-backed frameworks adopted by programs and cited by peers.
An original competency framework for PA education that maps the essential clinical, cognitive, and professional capabilities every PA graduate must demonstrate. Designed to move beyond checklist-based assessment toward holistic clinical reasoning evaluation.
A systematic approach to designing educational experiences that integrate technology thoughtfully. Each element addresses when, how, and why AI and digital tools should enter the learning process — always in service of deeper reasoning.
A funded research project developing AI-generated clinical assessment questions with personalized remediation pathways. AMIA Best Paper finalist. GenPACKS demonstrates that AI can enhance clinical reasoning assessment without replacing the student's independent thinking process — the reasoning-first principle applied to educational AI research.
Dr. Patel on stage — international keynote
AI is not a change in the quality of care, rather an evolution in the practice of it.
